AQV at BIZZ.CLUB Iași: Brand Positioning 101

Our colleague, Mădălin Miu, recently took the stage at BIZZ.CLUB Iași (SEEDS chapter) at the Grand Hotel Traian. Addressing a room full of founders, executives, and local entrepreneurs, Mădălin tackled a core dilemma that challenges high-performing companies: Why do category-leading businesses so often lose market share to lower-cost competitors?

His keynote, “The Brand Strategy Framework: How Strategic Positioning Turns Excellence into a Competitive Advantage,” examined the critical gap between maintaining a polished corporate identity and actually competing on value.

Beyond the surface

In saturated markets, premium brands often fall into the same trap. They invest heavily in slick visual identity systems, refresh their marketing collateral, and deliver superior operational execution, only to be commoditised and judged purely on price.

When you frame your value strictly around technical specifications, even top-tier offerings risk being perceived as nothing more than an expensive option.

As Mădălin emphasised during his presentation, this disconnect rarely stems from pricing or product quality. It is a fundamental issue of market perception and strategic positioning.

Identity is how you look. Strategy is how you win.

A well-crafted visual identity gives your brand a modern presence, but it offers little competitive defence on its own.

True differentiation requires moving away from generic, easily copied claims such as “superior quality” or “unmatched service” that every competitor uses. Instead, it relies on distinct, “onlyness” attributes that fundamentally reframe how buyers evaluate your category.

Rather than attempting to make a brand look more premium, the real strategic objective is to answer one question: Which category definition makes your brand the obvious choice, rather than the costly alternative?
